Hospital GA With A Specialist
Experienced With Anxious Kids
THE SHORT VERSION
For most children, a calm explain-as-we-go approach and nitrous oxide — laughing gas — are all that’s needed to stay comfortable through treatment. Nitrous is mild, safe, and wears off within minutes. For very young children, extensive treatment, or kids with special healthcare needs who can’t manage care in the chair, hospital dentistry under general anesthesia is available with a specialist. We’ll help you decide which is genuinely right for your child.
Comfort Comes First, Sedation Second
Before we reach for anything, we lean on the simplest tool there is: a patient, kid-friendly approach. We show your child what each instrument does, let them get comfortable, and narrate every step in words they understand. A surprising number of children who arrive nervous end up fine with nothing more than that and a show on the ceiling TV. Sedation is there for the times that approach isn’t enough, not as a default.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the gentlest form of help we offer. Your child breathes it through a small nosepiece, and within a few minutes it eases anxiety and takes the edge off, while they stay fully awake and able to respond to us. When the treatment’s done, we switch to plain oxygen and it clears out of their system within minutes — no grogginess, and they can usually head right back to their normal day. It has a long, reassuring safety record in children.
Hospital Dentistry Under General Anesthesia
Some situations call for more. A very young child with extensive decay, a child who simply can’t cope with treatment awake, or a patient with special healthcare needs may be best served by having all their care completed at once while fully asleep. For those cases we arrange treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting, with a medical anesthesia specialist managing the sedation. That means your child’s dental work gets done safely and comfortably in a single visit, monitored by professionals whose only job that day is keeping them safe.
We’ll talk through the honest pros and cons with you, including when it’s worth it and when it isn’t, so the choice fits your child rather than a one-size-fits-all policy.
How We Decide Together
The right level of comfort depends on your child’s age, temperament, how much treatment is needed, and any medical or sensory considerations. We’ll give you a clear recommendation and answer every question before anything is scheduled. Safety guides all of it.
Coverage varies by option and plan; we accept Medicaid and most insurance, with CareCredit and Sunbit available. See the Raleigh insurance page.

Questions Parents Ask Us
Is laughing gas safe for children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used forms of sedation in children's dentistry. Your child stays awake and responsive, and it clears from the body within minutes once the treatment is finished.
Will my child be asleep with nitrous oxide?
No. Nitrous keeps your child relaxed but fully awake and able to talk with us. It simply takes the edge off anxiety so the visit goes smoothly.
When is general anesthesia the right choice?
It's considered for very young children with extensive treatment needs, kids who can't manage care while awake, or patients with special healthcare needs. It lets all the work be completed comfortably in one visit while your child is asleep.
Where is the general anesthesia done?
In a hospital setting with a medical anesthesia specialist managing the sedation, so your child is monitored by professionals throughout. We coordinate the dental care side of the visit.
Do you offer oral or IV sedation in the office?
Our in-office comfort option is nitrous oxide. When a child needs deeper sedation, we arrange hospital dentistry under general anesthesia with a specialist rather than using IV sedation in the office.
How do you decide what my child needs?
We weigh your child's age, anxiety level, the amount of treatment, and any medical or sensory needs, then give you a clear recommendation. Nothing is scheduled until your questions are answered.
