Space Maintainers for Kids in Raleigh, NC

Lose a baby tooth too soon and the others can drift into the gap. A space maintainer holds the spot so the adult tooth has room to arrive.

THE SHORT VERSION

A space maintainer is a small custom appliance that holds open the gap left when a baby tooth is lost early, so the neighboring teeth don’t drift in and crowd out the adult tooth waiting underneath. It’s comfortable, easy to live with, and far simpler than the orthodontic work that crowding can otherwise lead to. We fit it, check it as your child grows, and remove it when the permanent tooth is ready.

Why an Early Gap is a Problem

Each baby tooth does double duty: it lets your child chew and speak, and it saves the exact spot where an adult tooth is forming below. When a baby tooth is lost early — usually to deep decay or an injury — the teeth on either side tend to lean and slide into the empty space. By the time the adult tooth is ready to come in, there may be no room left, which sets up crowding, an impacted tooth, or a bite that needs correcting.

A space maintainer prevents that drift before it starts. It’s a small step now that can spare your child more involved treatment down the road.

How it Works and What it Feels Like

We take a quick impression or scan and have a custom appliance made to fit your child’s mouth. The most common design anchors to one tooth with a small band and gently holds the space with a smooth loop or bar; other designs maintain space across several teeth at once. Most kids adjust within a day or two and soon forget it’s there. It doesn’t interfere with normal eating, and it’s easy to keep clean with regular brushing.

Living With It

Caring for a space maintainer is simple. Brush around it like any other tooth, and steer clear of sticky candy and chewing gum, which can tug it loose. We’ll check it at each visit to make sure it still fits as your child grows, and we’ll let you know the moment the adult tooth is on its way so we can remove the appliance at just the right time.

We accept Medicaid and most plans, with CareCredit and Sunbit available — see the Raleigh insurance page.

Questions Parents Ask Us

Does my child really need a space maintainer?

Not every early tooth loss needs one — it depends on which tooth, your child's age, and how the other teeth are positioned. We'll evaluate and give you a straight recommendation rather than placing one automatically.

Most children adjust within a day or two and barely notice it. It's smooth, custom-fit, and doesn't get in the way of normal eating or speaking.

Until the permanent tooth underneath is ready to come in, which can be months or a few years depending on the tooth. We check the fit at each visit and remove it at the right time.

Brush around it as usual and avoid sticky, gummy candies that can pull it loose. Bring your child to regular checkups so we can make sure it still fits as the mouth grows.

Call us and we'll get your child in to recement or refit it. Keeping the appliance in place is what protects the space, so it's worth a prompt visit.

They're frequently covered by Medicaid and dental plans when they follow a necessary extraction or early tooth loss. We'll verify your coverage and offer financing for any balance.

Keeping the Space, Protecting the Smile

If your child lost a baby tooth early, a space maintainer can save bigger orthodontic headaches later. Book a visit to find out if one’s needed.
