Gentle With Scared Kids

THE SHORT VERSION

While we’re open, give us a call and we’ll push hard to fit your child in that same day. After we close, leave a voicemail and we’ll ring you back at the start of the next morning. Save a knocked-out adult tooth in milk and come in fast; never reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. And whenever there’s bleeding you can’t control, swelling that affects breathing, or a head injury, go to the emergency room first.

Getting Your Child Seen Quickly

Call us while we’re open and we’ll guard a little room in the day for children in pain, squeezing your child in the same day wherever it’s at all possible. Some days book up faster than others, so we’d rather promise same-day by availability than make a guarantee we can’t always keep. If we can’t get you in right away, we’ll say so plainly and help you map out the safest next move.

Once we’ve closed, leave a voicemail spelling out what happened. We listen to messages early and call back at the top of the morning to bring your child in. We’re upfront that we aren’t a round-the-clock clinic — a true overnight emergency sometimes belongs in a hospital, not a dental chair, and we’d sooner steer you to the right door than overpromise.

When the Emergency Room Comes First

Most tooth troubles are ours to solve, not the ER’s — a hospital usually can’t repair a tooth and will route you back to a dentist regardless. A handful of situations, though, are medical before they’re dental. Head to the ER or dial 911 if your child has bleeding that won’t stop, swelling creeping toward the eye or interfering with breathing or swallowing, a jaw that may be broken, or a head injury paired with confusion, vomiting, or fainting. Once your child is stable, we’ll pick up the dental side from there.

First Aid, Situation by Situation

Knocked-out permanent tooth: Lift it by the crown, never the root. Rinse it gently in milk or water without scrubbing, then ease it back into the socket if you can and have your child bite a clean cloth; if you can’t, tuck it into a cup of milk. Call us at once — with an adult tooth, the opening half-hour to hour is everything.

Knocked-out baby tooth: Don’t push it back in — doing so can harm the adult tooth still forming beneath. Ease any bleeding with gentle pressure from a clean cloth, reassure your child, and call so we can check the area.

Toothache: Rinse with warm water, floss carefully on both sides of the sore tooth to free trapped food, and give children’s pain reliever at the label dose. Never rest an aspirin against the gum. A lingering ache usually signals something that needs treating, so call us.

Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse the mouth, stash any fragments in milk, and hold a cold compress to the cheek for swelling. Call us to have it checked even if your child isn’t hurting much.

Swelling or a gum pimple: A puffy face or a pimple-like bump on the gum can flag infection and shouldn’t sit. Call the same day — and if swelling balloons or affects breathing, treat it as an ER emergency.

Settling a Frightened, Hurting Child

A child who’s both scared and in pain needs a gentler tempo, and our Fayetteville team is set up for precisely that. We talk through each step before it happens, offer nitrous oxide to help anxious kids ease down, and want you right at your child’s side the whole time. Plenty of the children we treat — including those from Fort Bragg families navigating a stressful day — walk out far calmer than they walked in.

We accept most insurance plans, with CareCredit and Sunbit financing available — see the Fayetteville insurance page.

Questions Fayetteville Parents Ask

My child knocked out a permanent tooth — what now?

Hold it by the crown, rinse gently with milk, and place it back in the socket if you can or store it in milk. Then call us immediately. For adult teeth, acting within roughly the first hour gives the best chance of saving it.

No. Reinserting a baby tooth can injure the developing adult tooth underneath. Stop any bleeding with gentle pressure, soothe your child, and call us to take a look.

We try our hardest during office hours and reserve room for kids in pain, so same-day is often possible — though it depends on the day's schedule. Call (910) 965-0123 and we'll find the fastest option.

Rinse with warm water, gently floss beside the tooth to clear trapped food, and give children's pain reliever per the label. Skip aspirin on the gum, and call us, since a persistent ache usually needs treatment.

For uncontrolled bleeding, fast-spreading swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, a possible broken jaw, or a head injury with confusion or vomiting. Those are medical emergencies first — we'll handle the tooth once your child is stable.

Yes — we care for children from Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, Raeford, and the surrounding communities. Call us and we'll get your child the urgent care they need.
